Jolene the Sunbird woke up today and got a new valve (cam) cover gasket, a new air filter, and a new amplifier for the factory radio.
The radio now operates all four speakers and doesn’t make snap, crackle, and pop noises constantly. Before, with the bad amp, I had to have it turned up all the way to even hear it and then, only two or three of the four speakers worked. The amp I got from eBay and it came out of a late-‘80s Chevy truck. Same partnumber, though.
I took her for a 10-15 mile drive and didn’t have any burning oil smell and enjoyed a nice sounding radio. “Nice”, for being a 29-year-old cheap Delco system, I mean.
Th e old valve cover gasket was barely on there hand tight and had been reused. As a result, oil was splashing out almost freely and dripping down and being burned off, creating a wonderful occasional odor.
56,900 miles now.

Save the Coupes! It’s a noble quest you have undertaken, given those cars weren’t designed to last more than 65k, but saving even one example for future generations will earn you eternal OPPO life!

Maybe mine needs a new amp. The radio does the same thing in my GP.

I honestly didn’t expect the amp to fix the radio issue but it sure did.
As for the valve cover gasket, I can only hope that solves the mysterious oil leak. It wasn’t enough to drip onto the garage floor or make the car low on oil but it was enough to make a big under-hood mess.
And yeah, this thing is so cheaply put together it’s laughable . But, having one in this condition makes me smile since it is such a rarity nowadays. Most of these died 10-15 years ago!

What year Grand Prix? If it has a little square radio like my Sunbird, it’ll likely take the same amp. They seem to be plentiful-ish on eBay from Chevy trucks.

I might give that a shot. It hasn’t done it in a few months, though, so I also might just do nothing.
